Alex “Boof” Boston
Six years ago, the rugby world of Banff was forever changed, and changed for the better. A new coach, a mentor and a great role model to look up to joined the Banff rugby community and ever since has been helping young athletes improve themselves on and off the pitch.
As many Australians do, Alex “Boof” Boston came to Banff to experience the lifestyle that this incredible Rocky Mountain town has to offer. Eight years later he is now looking to make Banff his permanent home.
Boof quickly discovered that the true way into the vibrant Banff community was through volunteering. His experience working in youth and boys camps – combined with his high level rugby skill set – made him a perfect fit to assist John Petroff in coaching the Banff Community High School senior boys’ rugby team.
“His leadership, dedication, hard work and uncanny ability to understand all that the boys require (both socially and physically) have made him an invaluable asset on the team,” said one of his three nominators.
Under his leadership, the boys’ rugby team has grown substantially, earning one provincial championship and coming in a close second in yet another provincial showdown. This year, Boof made the transition from assistant coach to head coach, taking the helm of the Banff Women’s rugby team.
Boof’s dedication to sport has created connections with at-risk youth, who otherwise would not be connected to their school, community and peers in this way. “His positive influence is far reaching and the impact he has made on the players and the school is immeasurable,” shared another nominator.
Congratulations Boof and thank you for your contributions to the Banff community. You are truly an inspiration and you make Banff a better place to live because of your dedication to helping others. SHINE would like to say, “thank you for who you are and most of all Thanks for Giving!”
