Jemima Maycock

This is the first profile of our 12 honourees, as chosen by the 2013 SHINE jury. Jemima Maycock is an outstanding young woman and is one of two youth being recognized this year. This inspiring honouree was nominated by two members of the Banff community who wish to recognize her for her amazing community spirit. She has done big things despite her young age – she just turned 13 this year! Having moved to Banff from Switzerland when she was 9 years old, Jemima immediately involved herself in the new community around her.

Her nominators had many wonderful things to share about this young lady, both praising her for her dedication to the rights of young girls in Afghanistan. In 2009, Jemima founded the Banff chapter of Little Women for Little Women, and since then has been hard at work raising funds that are donated to the House of Flowers orphanage in Kabul. The funds that Jemima and her friends raise help to support the development of educational and literary programs, contributing greatly to the lives of many people in Afghanistan who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to better themselves in such a way. The money raised by LWLW has contributed to the training of 1,950 teachers who have been able to impact the lives of an estimated 468,000 Afghan secondary students on an annual basis.

The first of this youth’s two nominators described the young honouree as someone who, “radiates a bright energy which endears her to everyone she meets.” The nominator went on to say that, “I am in awe of her dedication and passion for girls’ rights, and believe that she has a remarkable sense of justice for a girl her age.”

Jemima’s second nominator echoed those same sentiments and shared her belief that Jemima is a young lady who has, “strong moral values and a heart as big as the great outdoors.”

When she isn’t busy raising funds through raffles, bake sales or toy sales, this remarkable young woman enjoys rock climbing and horseback riding.

Congratulations Jemima and thank you for your contributions to the Banff community. You are truly an inspiration and you make Banff a better place to live because of your dedication to helping others. SHINE would like to say, “thank you for who you are and most of all Thanks for Giving!”
